Toowoomba teacher enters 2020 council election race

A TOOWOOMBA schoolteacher and former small business owner is the latest person to enter the 2020 council election race.
Highlands Christian College educator Tim McMahon will run on a platform to encourage and foster small business in the region if elected.
Mr McMahon said he was also wanted to invest in more community infrastructure, such as sporting and tourism assets that attracted both visitors and residents.
"We've got to make our region friendly for business and an innovative hub for small businesses," he said.
"I'd love to look at a program that offers business grants to Australia's brightest minds to set up in Toowoomba.
"There are some big ticket items, like a water park, or the mountain biking park that they've been talking (in the works), that seem to stall until just before the election. I'd like to see a lot more clarity and more investment.
"I'd like to see our tourism done better, have it all year around rather than just at one point in the year."
Mr McMahon said his children growing up in a prosperous region were behind his election bid.
"I want my kids to grow up in this region and I want to do my part to make sure they grow up in the best city they can," he said.
"I want a city that has lots of places to work, lots of leisure and sporting activities.
"There's a big thing to be said about sustainability in our region."
Mr McMahon said he would take leave from work to run his campaign.
Along with his full-time profession, he also owned mobile hairdressing business Clay Hair with his wife Kylie until recently.
