Hundreds of talented Toowoomba musicians and actors took to the Empire Theatre’s stage this week to mark the beginning of the speech, drama and instrumental sections of this year’s Toowoomba Eisteddfod.

Year 8 student Oliver Murphy from Centenary Heights State High School competed in a number of categories on Thursday with his double bass, viola and violin.

“I started competing at the eisteddfod in 2019 and find I’m in my happy place when I’m performing up on stage,” he said.

“I have so much fun. It’s a great opportunity being able to perform and compete but also being able to listen to other local musicians from across our region. It’s a great experience for all musicians.”

The viola was his favourite instrument despite only picking it up recently.

“I started playing it three months ago, and I already love the tone, depth and warmth of the strings and am enjoying being able to share my progress here at the eisteddfod.”
