Toowoomba school unveils $3.5milion senior block

A Toowoomba school has come a long way since its move to Glenvale 20 years ago and that was evident yesterday at the opening of its new senior building.

DARLING DOWNS Christian School has come a long way since its move to Glenvale 20 years ago and that was evident yesterday at the official opening of the school's new senior building.

Staff, students and other invited members came together just before noon for the opening ceremony, officiated by Ipswich state member Jennifer Howard.

School captain Mickayla Higgins, who started at Darling Downs Christian School 12 years ago, said the campus had expanded dramatically since 2008.

"It's grown heaps, there's been a new primary building, library, green spaces and now this - it's wonderful," she said

."(The new senior building) is very spacious and with the lighting and views, it's beautiful - wherever you're sitting you can look out on Mt Peel.

"We've been using it for around seven weeks now - it's bittersweet to have to leave it soon."

Darling Downs Christian School principal Adrian Fitzpatrick said the new building, which cost about $3.5 million, was designed to be a flexible learning space for year 7 to 12 students.

"We're very proud - it's already had a big impact on our students and staff," Mr Fitzpatrick said.

"It's bought a practical, open, airy, community feel to our secondary school."

Mr Fitzpatrick said the school moved to its current location in 2000 and operated out of a single building.

"We had prep to year 8 in that one building and then there was a staged the development of the school over time," he said.

"We had a very spread out campus, so this new building allows all of our humanities and arts to be located in one spot next to our other senior facilities."

The school hosted its annual health week activities in the new building and drama students are planning to put on a performance in the space shortly.
