Toowoomba Reclaim the Night pushes for women’s right to safety in CBD

Women are often the victims of physical and sexual violence while walking at night — now a powerful message has been spread through Toowoomba streets to push against it.

Organisers behind Toowoomba’s first Reclaim the Night rally in more than a decade are hoping to see it grow into a large movement.

More than 50 people marched through the CBD on Friday night to advocate for women’s safety while out at night.

Domestic Violence Action Centre Toowoomba service manager Kath Turley said women were more likely to be assaulted or harassed while out at night, something that needed to change.

“Our hope is to restart the momentum around raising awareness of being safe to walk the streets at night,” she said.

“Reclaim the Night hasn’t occurred for about 15 years, quite a long time ago — what we were rallying for was around women feeling safe.”

Ms Turley said the march earned vocal support from passers-by sitting in cafes and restaurants.

“It was encouraging to have that support, so we’re hopeful we’ll have a growing numbers in the years to come.”
