Grant Campbell refers to the Toowoomba Hospice as a very special place.
In 2003 as a 27-year-old Mr Campbell remembers the care and understanding shown to him and his family by the then newly-opened hospice and their staff as his mum, Barbara Turley, passed away from cancer.
“It was just such a special place, it was almost like she was in a family home.” Mr Campbell said.
The Newlands Group civil construction manager jumped at the chance to help fundraise for such a great cause, meaning he was suspended in a cherry picker basket more than 20m above Chalk Drive for the annual Hang Ya Boss Out To Dry fundraiser on Friday morning. He was asked to take the place of Newlands Group co-owner Ashley Milner who was a regular participant but was unavailable this year. Mr Milner’s mother, Ruth, spent her final days at the hospice in 2013.
The 12 participating bosses of 2024 have so far raised more than $85,000, on track to beat the previous record of $88,000 set in 2014. With their give now profiles staying open for donations until June 19, organisers are hopeful of smashing 2014’s total and achieving their goal of $100,000.
“The generosity of this wonderful community and the bosses involved even when times are tough - and they are - shows us that the community appreciates what we do,” Toowoomba Hospice manager Mark Munro said.
The annual event is the major fundraiser for the hospice and was first run in 2012.
