AS THE first rays of sunlight found their way over the Range escarpment last Monday, four Toowoomba golfers teed off on a day to remember.

Toowoomba Golf Club members David Marr, Brenton Fowler, Mitchell Dunbar and Jason Leicht took part in Cancer Council’s The Longest Day with a unique and long twist.

The foursome went beyond the traditional 36, 54 or 72 holes of the fundraiser and instead played 125 holes.

“Last year when we participated in The Longest Day we did 100 holes,” Toowoomba Golf Club general manager David Marr said.

“At that time we believe no group of four had ever done 100 holes for charity.

“This year, in celebrating our club’s 125th anniversary, we decided to do it even better and do 125 holes.”

Teeing off at 4.30am and finishing the day shortly before 7pm, the group was proud to be able support a lifesaving organisation.

“All of us in one way or another have known it (cancer) in our families or in close relationships,” Mr Marr said.

“We had some wonderful groups involved, and as a club we raised nearly $30,000.

“I’m super proud of the club and our community who were able to support such a great cause.

“It (The Longest Day) is such a great initiative, one that a lot of golf clubs are getting, and something that we can get behind because who knows it might prove to be a turning point in the future,” Mr Marr said.
