Toowoomba girl’s life transformed on NDIS journey

IN the past six months, 12-year-old Mia Pugno has taken steps her family never dreamt possible.

IN the past six months, 12-year-old Mia Pugno has taken steps her family never dreamt possible.

Mia, who has an intellectual disability and autism, receives support from the National Disability Insurance Scheme, and this year has been working through an intensive support program created by her occupational therapist.

The program is delivered six days a week by Mia's support worker and supported by her mum Cherie Pugno.

"We have tried something completely different this year called intensive interaction," Ms Pugno said.

"In the last few months, we have seen massive changes.

"Amanda our OT said that what Mia has achieved in six months, she would expect to take five years, that's all to do with having a support worker here every day."

From struggling to communicate with her family at the beginning of the program, Mia now knows more than 200 words.

"She didn't have any speech when we started," Ms Pugno said.

"Now I am not so worried all the time.

"With her knowing a few words, I am able to know what she wants or needs.

"This little girl that we never knew has just come out."

Ms Pugno said Mia is now engaging better with her peers at school and her family.

"Everyone around her has noticed the changes," she said.

"Her grandparents who did not have a lot to do with her are starting to be able to have a relationship with her.

"On all levels, it has been incredible."

Ms Pugno said she was excited for the future and Mia's transition into high school next year.

"She is going really well at school and she is off to high school next year," she said.

"The NDIS has made a big difference for Mia and for the family. For myself, I feel like life is getting back to normal."

Mia is supported on her NDIS journey by Carers Queensland, NDIS Partner in the Community for the Toowoomba region.
