Toowoomba developer and philanthropist Clive Berghofer reveals contracting Covid-19, in good health

He’s a Toowoomba identity and in a vulnerable demographic for Covid-19 — now Clive Berghofer has revealed he caught the virus just days ago, and has some words of advice for government.

One of Toowoomba’s richest men Clive Berghofer has revealed he recently tested positive for Covid-19 but said ironically he was suffering the least out of his family.

The 87-year-old property developer, former mayor and philanthropist revealed he’d caught the virus at a function in Brisbane, along with four other relatives.

While Covid-19 has proven to be dangerous for elderly residents and those with compromised immunities, Mr Berghofer said he’d only shown minimal symptoms.

In fact, he only tested for it after his relatives came back as positive.

“I got it a week or so ago, but it didn’t affect me much. I went to a function in Brisbane, and five of us got the virus,” Mr Berghofer said.

“I suffer badly with sinus problems, but each one of (my family) got something different.

“It took me a while to find out because I wasn’t very sick — I was the eldest and I suffered less than my youngest daughter.

“I got a sore throat (last) Sunday afternoon, and then I had it again on Monday.

“I tested myself at home and then went to Baillie Henderson and got tested.”

Queensland’s youngest Covid death revealed

Mr Berghofer, who was a vocal opponent against the controversial quarantine hub being established at Wellcamp, declined to comment on the news the facility would be mothballed this weekend.

But he noted his sympathy for governments trying to battle with a virus that was unpredictable in nature.

“It keeps everybody guessing, no one knows what’s going to happen,” he said.

“It might never stop.”

Mr Berghofer, along with Capilano, QML and Dr Cherrell Hirst, was inducted into the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame in Brisbane earlier this month.
