Following years of repair work, the problem-plagued Toowoomba Bypass has officially reopened at full capacity.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads announced on Friday afternoon long-delayed repairs to the road had been completed and all lanes now open.

Speed limits on the bypass have also returned to normal.

“It has been a long journey and we’re glad to be here!” they announced on their Facebook page.

The work was required due to several severe weather events since 2022 causing geotechnical challenges.

“Huge shout out to the community and the heavy vehicle industry for your patience while this massive job was completed.”

Large sections of a northern cutting of the eastbound lane fell to pieces in October 2022 after an unseasonably wet summer and autumn.

Motorist were initially told the repairs would take a few weeks but timelines quickly expanded, with multiple delays due to geotechnical and safety issues.

The works previously forced heavy freight traffic through the city, causing concern for residents and logistics companies alike.
