Weather To Watch

TOOWOOMBA youngster Thea Kraschnefski took advantage of the sunshine before summer storms are forecast to hit the region today and next week.

Bureau of Meteorology Atmospheric Scientist Brooke Pagel said the region could see severe thunderstorms develop today, with damaging winds.

“There is a high in the Tasman Sea that is maintaining onshore winds along the east coast, but it’s going to push a little bit further west, reaching around Toowoomba and Warwick,” she said.

“It’s going to trigger thunderstorms around those Border Ranges, like Warwick, Stanthorpe and near the NSW border.

“The storms with be possibly severe with the main hazard being damaging winds and not much rain.

“We’re looking at about 20mm in isolated storms.”

Ms Pagel said showers would continue over the weekend and into the coming week.

“Nothing significant, but thunderstorms are possible on the weekend and next week on Tuesday, Wednesday and even Thursday,” she said.

“That’s due to a trough that's in western Queensland moving across triggering those storms.

“They will most likely just be a normal summer thunderstorm,” she said.

The region is predicted to be humid today as cloud cover traps the heat, however parts of the Darling Downs will reach close to 40 over the coming days.

“Temperatures today are between 33 and 38, more for Goondiwindi and those western spaces,” Ms Pagel said.

“Dalby will be about 35, and Toowoomba will hover around 30.

“Over the weekend, temperatures will drop a little to 26 to 28 degrees in Toowoomba with the rain.”
