Showers and storms to increase over weekend

AFTER some much needed rain this morning, rainfall is expected to increase at the weekend.

SOME parts of Toowoomba welcomed much needed rain this morning, and the Bureau of Meteorology said there was more to come.

Toowoomba Airport recorded just 0.4mm this morning, while Highfields recorded 2mm.

BOM forecaster Lauren Pattie said heavier falls could be expected over the weekend.

"There is some cloud cover over (Toowoomba), but it is some drizzly rain which makes it seem like more than it is," Ms Pattie said.

"Today there's not much, there are some showers passing the coast pushing towards Toowoomba and the range.

"There is a trough system currently out near Birdsville which will develop in the coming days and sweep east.

"Some rain will start to approach Toowoomba late on Saturday night."

With showers and storms forecast for Sunday afternoon through to early Monday, Ms Pattie said Toowoomba residents could expect 10mm on Sunday and up to 20mm early Monday, with the potential for more under a storm.

"Storms could bring some decent rainfall for a lot of people by Monday, but storms will be isolated," she said.

"There could be 10-30mm over the weekend and Monday.

"If there's a storm you could see up to 40mm."

Ms Pattie said from today Toowoomba would start to see some warmer minimum and maximum temperatures.

"Today we've seen some warmer minimum temperatures thanks to some cloud cover," she said.

"That warming trend will continue for both the maximums and the minimums over the weekend.

"We'll cool down again following that system, by Tuesday we will see frost and the cooler temperatures spread."
