TOOWOOMBA residents have overwhelmingly supported a call to introduce bulk kerbside collection by the council, after the idea was floated by several councillors this week.
The concept, which was highlighted by Crs Megan O'Hara Sullivan and Kerry Shine at the ordinary meeting on Tuesday, earned plenty of supporters on The Chronicle's social media yesterday.
An online poll of nearly 50 readers also found more than 70 per cent of respondents would like to see it introduced.
Many highlighted how it was not just a good way for people to get junk removed if they didn't have a trailer or ute, but was also an opportunity for scavengers to look for treasure among the trash.
"Yes please! And I have no worries about people coming around and taking things before pick up - hopefully they'll recycle things, giving them new life," Chrisy McConnell wrote.
Water and waste general manager Damian Platts expressed his concerns with the concept at the meeting, with the biggest issues to do with cost and safety.
"There have been calls over several years for us to consider that, but I don't believe it's particularly safe," he said.
"We find people putting material out on the kerbside, which creates a trip hazard and un-managed material going out there."
Water and waste chair Cr Rebecca Vonhoff said she welcomed an upcoming councillor information session with Mr Platts on the matter.
"The GM has his thoughts on it, but we'd have understand the benefits and the costs and then we'd need to weigh that up and that's why we need that information session," she said.
