Popular cafe to reopen after fire repairs

A popular Bridge Street cafe will reopen tomorrow, four and a bit months on from when it was the target of a senseless arson attack.

A POPULAR Bridge St cafe will reopen tomorrow, four and a bit months on from when it was the target of a senseless arson attack.

For Burrow owners Tasch Egger and Clemence Demouzon, it has felt like "forever" since they were last open.

It was September 20 last year and Toowoomba was buzzing ahead of the opening weekend of Carnival of Flowers when Burrow caught fire.

Crews were able to extinguish the flames within an hour, and the building was saved.

Despite police believing the fire was deliberately lit, no one has been arrested.

"We were actually really lucky that it was not a big fire," Ms Demouzon said.

But there was still a lot of work to do - walls needed to be repaired, the roof replaced, and electricals rewired.

"It feels like it took forever considering it was a tiny fire, but its just because there's lots of logistics involved," she said.

But by 6.30am tomorrow, the front door of Burrow will be open once more.

"One day you see everyone - the friendly faces and regulars. And then suddenly you just don't see anybody.

"We're looking forward to feeling like we're part of the community again."

Ms Demouzon and Ms Egger said the Toowoomba community had been extremely supportive in the wake of the fire, with other cafes offering to give shifts to their staff, and the public offering to help any way they could - even donating money.

"It's been quite overwhelming," Ms Demouzon said.

"We just want to say thankyou to everyone in the community for being really supportive."

Ms Demouzon said she and Ms Egger felt for the rest of the country who were fighting their own fire battles at the moment.

"We got lucky, and it puts things in perspective you know. We're really grateful of the support of everyone, and as soon as we can, we will give back."
