Owners will need to register their pets after microchip maker enters receivership

One of the companies responsible for collecting pet microchip data has gone into liquidation and its is feared local councils and vets will not be able to access ownership information stored in the devices.

It is feared the ownership records for ten of thousands of pets across Australia will be lost HomeSafeID going into receivership.

A warning on the business’ website urges owners to transfer their pet’s data to a new provide as soon as possible.

The RSPCA has added it voice to the warning, saying that if the ownership data lapse pounds and rescue shelter will not be able to return lost animals to their homes.

Toowoomba Regional Council Environmental and Regulatory spokesman Councilor Bill Cahill said it was a serious issue which will likely affect hundreds of Darling Downs residents

“Microchips which continue to be registered with HomeSafe ID will no longer provide any ownership information when scanned in the future,” he said.

“If members of the community drop off a lost dog or cat to our Animal Management Centre, then we will have to rely solely on the owner of the pet to come in and identify their lost animal. This will significantly delay the entire reuniting process.

“There are several registries which residents can use to change over their microchip details, including Central Animal Records, Australasian Animal Registry, Petsafe and Global Micro Animal Registry”.

Pet owners should first check petaddress.com.au to find out what company holds their information.

If owners don’t know their pet’s chip details, or have lost their paperwork, then owners should book an appointment with their vet.
