The Queensland Police Minister and police commissioner were in town yesterday for the official opening of the Newtown police facility and the Highfields police station.

They toured the new facilities, with celebrations limited due to COVID-19 restrictions.

"Newtown will have in it our district crime prevention officers, our volunteers and our multicultural officers, and the Highfields police station was second to none," Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said.

"That station currently has seven officers and it really is future proof - they can have up to 24."

Commissioner Carroll said she had visited the two sites earlier this year, but this was her first tour inside them.

"I was extraordinarily pleased, and I said to the Minister these things are great for morale, but it's more than that," she said.

"It's having the right technology, equipment and facilities to work from to enable (them) to build a relationship with the community."

Queensland Police Minister Mark Ryan said it was good to see the new facilities embedded within the suburbs.

"The relationship that the police have here in Toowoomba with the community is exceptional," Mr Ryan said.

"The great relationship between the police and the community is down to the hard work of our police officers.

"I also acknowledge the hard work of the construction teams involved."

The two facilities cost a combined $4 million to build.
