STAFF and volunteers of St Stephen's Uniting Church Toowoomba Meals On Wheels celebrated 60 years of service yesterday.

Having volunteered with the service for 54 of those years, Sue Tyson was given the honour of cutting the cake.

"A friend of mine asked if I could deliver meals with her and that's how it started," Ms Tyson said.

"This service has always been very progressive, they've taken up the challenge and acted on it.

"(The 60th celebration) is a wonderful thing for Toowoomba, it shows how generous the community has been over the past years and we look forward to the next 60 years."

Toowoomba Meals On Wheels chairman Julian Turner said the service had powered through the pandemic.

"There's not a feeling of pride, more a feeling of gratitude, that we have been able to do something like this and continue to do something like this," Mr Turner said.
