A 13-student school northeast of Warwick has taken the top state place for their solution to space junk in this years Kids in Space Queensland finals in Toowoomba.
After a week of illness, the students of Maryvale State School, a town between Toowoomba and Warwick almost cancelled their trip up to Toowoomba with only two out the five students able to attend, teaching principal Jo Wernecke said.
The students submitted a solution to space junk, inspired from the movie WALL-E, and the possibility that one day we might have to live out there, she said.
Originally they thought of vacuuming up all the space trash, but then decided on a net which would capture it into a space facility with the ability recycle and reuse it, she said.
The students were excited about heading down to Adelaide for the finals, but “it hadn’t hit home yet”, said Ms Wernecke who admitted she had not been planning for it.
“It’s a really great opportunity and gives the students a broader, more global perspective of education,” she said.
Vale View State School took out peer prize of the competition with their exploration of life on Mars. Congratulations to all the participants of the 2024 Kids in Space.
