CONSTRUCTION has begun on the long-awaited Highfields Aldi, with the external structure nearing completion.
The new store, located at 71 Highfields Rd, was approved by the Toowoomba Regional Council in December 2017 and spent months in the planning phase.
An ALDI Australia spokesman said work on the project started in June and the team had been making good progress.
"Just this week, the building foundation has started to take shape on site," the spokesman said.
"We are excited to bring our unique shopping experience to Highfields and will continue to update the community as our plans to open progress.
"Once open, ALDI Highfields will be supported by a team of 15-20 full and part time employees."
Newlands Group is heading construction of the new facility.
"The external structure of the building is near complete with the concrete tilt panels positioned into place and structural steel and roofing works underway," Newlands Group Commercial General Manager Danny Charlesworth said.
"We overcame some challenges with wet weather but we're at a point now where that's becoming more of a limited factor so we're on time for delivery."
The new ALDI will include a car park, redesigned shelving, expanded wooden produce bays and extended energy efficient chillers.
The date of completion has not yet been revealed.
