For the first time in at least 14 years, a Clifton club had to cancel a regular event due to the dangerous wet weather, but that failed to stop hundreds of visitors coming together to make some memories.
Margaret Cross of the Clifton Race Club said it was a nerve-racking time in the lead-up to Saturday’s race meet, which ended up being cancelled because the severe downpours made the track unsafe for horses and jockeys.
“During the week we had over 20mm, and on Friday we had the track inspected and it rates a soft seven, which was okay,” she said.
“But it was a big concern for us, especially because they said it would be okay, as long as it didn’t rain anymore. But then Saturday came.’
The race meet was cancelled, but hundreds still arrived to support the club, dressing in everything from race boots to gum boots.
“We were so grateful to those people who turned up, despite the weather conditions,” Ms Cross said.
“Everyone seems to have an enjoyable day, and we’re so thankful to them, and our sponsors for making the day possible.”
