Dairy farmer Kay Tommerup says an upcoming showcase of her region’s finest produce will not only be a display of high quality food but also its residents’ resilience.
Ms Tommerup, from Tommerup’s Dairy Farm, said she was proud of the way businesses in the Scenic Rim were recovering from had been a devastating 12 months.
Their perseverance during the pandemic will be rewarded with the return of Scenic Rim Eat Local Week, which was cancelled last year due coronavirus restrictions.
Ms Tommerup said she was excited that she and her fellow business owners would have a chance to showcase what they did.
“We have such a wonderful group of passionate producers, all welcoming visitors for a glimpse into their lives,” she said.
“I love that we can attend events held by other producers and enjoy watching their businesses shine.
Events on this year’s schedule include a gourmet twist on Breakfast with the Jersey Girls.
“(It) is the only event throughout the year where day visitors can immerse themselves in the beauty of a morning on the farm,” Mr Tommerup said.
“Looking back over our involvement with Eat Local Week, we can see how much our business has grown and developed through opening our farm gates to visitors for a backstage pass to our family dairy farm.”
About 150 people gathered at Tommerup’s Dairy Farm to celebrate the launch of ticket sales for the event last week.
Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said next month’s event would feature more than 120 individual celebrations.
“Locals and visitors can expect a jam-packed calendar full of their favourite events for foodies of all ages, from long table lunches and degustation dinners, to farm-gates and family fun at the Winter Harvest Festival,” Mr Christensen said.
“After a year of cancelled events across the globe, we cannot wait to see old friends and welcome new ones to join the Eat Local Week family and experience everything the Scenic Rim has to offer.
