A Toowoomba couple who told themselves they’d win the lottery one day have woken up as newly minted millionaires after landing a $1.4 million win in Saturday Gold Lotto.
They were one of seven division one winning entries in Saturday Gold Lotto.
So far in 2022, there have been three major lottery wins in the Darling Downs and Southwest region, collectively worth more than $1.62 million in prize money.
A Lott spokeswoman said the winning man, who wished to remain anonymous, said he had not slept since learning of his win.
“I’m in shock,” he said.
“I decided to check the results before falling asleep on Saturday night.
“When I saw the winning numbers come up, I thought to myself, ‘that can’t be real.’
“We’re really nervous but excited about what’s to come!”
According to data released by the Queensland Treasury, Australian punters spent $2.294 billion playing the Lotto in 2019, which is the most recent data available.
“It’s funny, he’s always said he’ll win division one, one day,” the winning woman said.
“We’ve been together for many years and have been through a lot – this means so much to us.
The couple said they will use the cash to open a hospitality business and hope to remain humble.
“It’s going to be a normal week. We will go to work, have a cup of coffee, and scratch some Instant Scratch-Its for a bit of fun,” the man said.
Their winning ticket was purchased at The Lucky Charm Toowoomba Plaza
The Lucky Charm owners Tony and Karen Hynes said the division one winning entry is wonderful news for the local community.
“We’re very excited to hear one of our customers has taken home a million-dollar prize,” Ms Hynes said.
“We hope it’s one of our regulars who has scored the win,” Karen said.
