AFTER 20 years as CEO of St Andrew's Toowoomba Hospital, Ray Fairweather is set to retire from the role next month.
He began his healthcare journey at Inverell Hospital, NSW in 1972 and advanced up the ranks into the role of Macquarie Area Health Service CEO in 1996.
Mr Fairweather became St Andrew's Toowoomba Hospital CEO on July 24, 2000.
"It's been a great place to grow," Mr Fairweather said.
"When I first started here there were few cancer services and few cardiology services.
"I think a highlight for me was being awarded the commonwealth government tender to establish a radiotherapy unit for the Darling Downs."
During his time as CEO, Mr Fairweather has overseen many hospital improvements, including the establishment of its cancer care service and cardiac catheter laboratory.
"I've been fortunate to have a supportive board and staff," he said.
"It's been a great place to work and it's a great community to be in."
He will finish up the role on August 14, handing the mantle to seasoned health service administrator Wally Bourdelov.
Mr Fairweather said he would remain in Toowoomba with his family after his retirement.
