Heavy haulage vehicles continue to be routed though the city after Toowoomba Bypass closure extends

Semi-trailers and other heavy vehicle will remain a constant feature on James Street and Toowoomba Connection Road after TMR extends the Toowoomba Bypass closure. More details:

Second Toowoomba Range Crossing open and in operation

Storm damage to cuttings along the Toowoomba Bypass continue to frustrate Transport and Main Roads and Nexus technicians who are working to reopen eastbound lanes of the Warrego Highway.

That reopening has been further delayed for storms that are forecast to pass over the region in the coming days.

“Nexus will keep the eastbound lanes closed until it has completed its assessments to ensure

reopening is safe for motorists,” a TMR spokesman said.

“The westbound lanes are unaffected and operating as usual.

“We apologise for any inconvenience the closure has caused to the community however safety

remains our top priority.”

The eastbound lanes were initially expected to be open by late November.

In a statement provided to the Chronicle last week, TMR said all costs to repair the Bypass will be paid for by Nexus, the construction company that built it.

It has created a stopgap measure with double stacked shipping containers lining the roadway to protect it from falling rocks.

They were installed on Friday.

“The maintenance and operation of the Toowoomba Range Second Crossing is managed under a long-term contract that was established at the time of bypass construction with Nexus,” the spokesman said.

“Under this contract, the state government does not pay for these repairs, and the cost is a matter for Nexus.”

The spokeswoman said the latest matter was the third major works required since the bypass opened in 2019.
