KAUFLAND has officially withdrawn its development application for a mammoth shopping centre at 353-359 Anzac Ave, Harristown.

The fourth-biggest retailer in the world announced plans to open a store in Toowoomba when it lodged a development application for the project just over a year ago.

But it all came unstuck when the company suddenly scuttled its plans to expand into Australia in January, pulling the pin on the 20 sites it had planned to open across the country, including Toowoomba.

This week, Kaufland Australia manager of property development Melissa McHugh wrote to Toowoomba Regional Council to withdraw its development application.

Kaufland has also requested a refund of its application fees.
