After witnessing hundreds of patients battle through the terrifying journey of cancer treatment, St Andrew’s oncology nurse Kate Beyer saw a need for more support for in the Toowoomba community and decided to do something about it.
“Patients were crying out for support during and at the completion of treatment and we had nothing available,” Ms Beyer said.
“Cancer treatment, while invasive and incredibly difficult, is a safety net for those enduring the steps towards remission and their families for a better life.
“However, when this treatment is completed – or the safety net is taken away, the patient has nowhere to turn.”
Ms Beyer set about researching, planning and investigating and after 18 months, Hope Horizons cancer wellness centre was born.
Now three years later, Ms Beyer and her team of volunteers are the only centre of its type in regional Queensland with close to 400 clients utilising the many allied health services offered to those going through cancer treatment.
“All our services are offered at no out-of-pocket expense to the patient,” Ms Beyer said.
“We rely heavily on the community for financial support with the Friends of Hope Horizon doing an incredible job raising funds for the centre.”
Friends of Hope Horizons are hosting a carpark sale on Sunday, February 7 from 12-4pm at the Hope Horizons Site at 146 Drayton Rd.
Complete with a six piece band, hot German waffles, high end second hand clothing, craft stalls, sausage sizzle and more it’s bound to be a great afternoon for the whole clan.
“We would love to see as many people there as possible,” event organiser and Hope Horizons
volunteer Steffi Jachmann said.
“There will be tours of the centre and lots of us here to tell you more about what we offer.”
