UPDATE 5pm: Neighbours have rescued a dog and four-wheel-drive ute from a major structure fire west of Toowoomba this afternoon.

Fire crews managed to contain the blaze and stop it from consuming the residence on Gulligal St in Kingsthorpe, which was reported before 4pm Monday.

The occupants were not home at the time.

QFES Acting Station Officer Tomas Neville said when firefighters arrived at the scene, the rear of the house was engulfed in flames and there had been some structural collapse.

“When we got here, the back half of the structure was fairly well involved in fire,” he said.

“We had crews who did make an entry to the structure to conduct a primary search.

“They also conducted fire suspension and have contained that fire to the rear end of that structure.

“There has been some structural collapse at the rear of the building which hampered the firefighters from gaining rear access to the building.”

Neighbour Geoffrey Coady said nearby residents rung triple-0 before attempting to move the occupant’s four-wheel-drive ute that was parked in the driveway.

Someone also rescued a dog that was in the backyard.

“I banged on the windows, banged on the door and it was still locked, then went around the side as far as I could but the smoke was coming too far up,” Mr Coady said.

“By then, there were other neighbours here and we made the choice to try and drag his 4WD ute out of the road.

“As we got it back onto the driveway, a tow truck came up and he pulled it right out of the road.

“Shortly after that, the neighbours were just hosing around the area.

“We found the pet dog hiding in the backyard, which we rescued.

“It’s a terrible way to end a terrible year.”

Fire crews will remain on site for some time to make the fire has been fully extinguished.
