Inside Toowoomba’s first energy efficient passive house

Toowoomba’s first energy efficient “passive house” is nearing completion.

KEARNEYS Spring will soon be home to Toowoomba's first energy efficient "passive house".

The German house design offers the highest standards of energy efficiency which substantially reduces its ecological footprint.

A passive house conserves energy by strictly limiting heat transfer through sealing technology.

The design also uses highly insulated exterior walls, roof and floor slab.

A ventilation system delivers superior air quality and an allergy-free environment.

Titanium Homes was tasked with the build, and owner Nathan Peters said despite years of experience in the industry he was learning new things every day.

"I've always had an interest in the concept, and while it has been a challenging build in some aspects, it has been great to work with the designer to bring it to life," Mr Peters said.

"They're much more energy efficient than your standard home, and with the way things are going they might become more popular."

Member for Toowoomba South David Janetzki noted the groundbreaking design technology and congratulated Titanium Homes on its construction of the house.

"It's pleasing to see a well-respected local company that employs local people deliver such an innovative project," Mr Janetzki said.

"It's extraordinary that during a cold week like we've just had the temperature inside this house would not drop below 20 degrees."

The extra house features generally add between 10 to 15 per cent to the total build cost.

However, the design provides for energy savings of up to 90 per cent compared with standard existing buildings, and more than 75 per cent compared with an average new construction.
