Senior officers from the police, ambulance and firefighting services, as well as Toowoomba Regional Council mayor Paul Antonio, have issued a final plea to motorists ahead of Christmas.
The message?
“Do the right thing on the roads,” Darling Downs District Acting Inspector Jason Hopgood said.
“There’s a small percentage of the community who have not got the message, that this is not the time for unsafe driving behaviour.”
Insp Hopgood said the Christmas Safety Campaign, which began on December 9, had already seen in excess of 550 traffic infringement notices issued, and 38 drink drivers and 39 drug drivers detected from 7000 RBTs.
He also said there’d been drivers whose actions had defied logic, like a P-plater on the Cunningham Hwy who was recorded doing 153kmh in a 100kmh zone and who also returned a blood alcohol reading of .091%, or a motorcycle rider at Nobby who got done doing 191kmh and had a BAC of .066%.
Insp Hopgood reminded drivers to be aware of the fatal five – speeding, driving under the influence of substances, not wearing a seatbelt, driving while fatigued, and driving while distracted.
