WHAT do you get when you mix drumming with cardio? Pound, a new form of exercise that is rising in popularity across the globe.

Sneaky exercise to music

WHAT do you get when you mix drumming with cardio? A new form of exercise that is rising in popularity across the globe.

Pound has now made it to Toowoomba and has been incorporated into a three part workout by Health by Numbers owner Annemarie Lyons.

"As part of the Toowoomba Regional Council's CHANGE project, I host some sessions twice a week," Ms Lyons said.

"On Tuesday we run a three weekly rotation, one is boxing, one is a weight circuit and then the next week is a session called Pound.

"It's based on drumming, choreographed to music."

Ms Lyons said the exercise was great for building strength and endurance.

"There are not too many places in Toowoomba that offer it," she said.

"But my clients love Pound - when I first introduced it there was a lot of laughter. It's sneaky exercise to music is what some people say."

Ms Lyons is a provider of the council's CHANGE project, an initiative which encourages residents to get active by subsidising a range of fitness activities.

"With the CHANGE project, clients can come and workout with me for $5 a session," she said.

Ms Lyons is now turning her attention to expanding the activity in Toowoomba.

"I've just launched into generation pound, for children in prep to 12 years of age," she said.

"I am the only instructor outside of Brisbane that does generation pound - which is not included in the council's CHANGE project."
