Driver, 60, fined after he crashed into North St rail overpass

A notorious Toowoomba overpass claimed another vehicle after a driver risk the low clearance. The truck is wrecked and the driver is facing a stiff fine.

A man has been fined after he over-estimated the height of the rail bridge on North St.

Police have fined a 60-year-old man for disobeying a low clearance sign after he over-estimated the height of a North St rail overpass.

The 60-old-man clipped the overpass, tearing off the top of his semi-trailer and prime move cab, about 2am Wednesday.

Jordi Gilbert and her husband Jason live nearby and heard the crash.

As a seasoned truck driver, Mrs Gilbert leapt into action, placing road cones and directing traffic.

A Woolworths delivery truck was wrecked in a single-vehicle crash.

“The truck was nearly empty but parts off it were scattered everywhere,” she said

“Cement from the bridge and shards of fibreglass from the truck were spread across on the road.”

“We cleared the debris off the road to keep one lane open while we waited for police.”

Police fined the 60-year-old male driver for disobeying a low clearance sign.

The driver sustained minor injuries and returned a negative result for a roadside breath test.

Mrs Gilbert said it was common for trucks to become lodged beneath the overpass.

“There needs to be more signs saying it is a low clearance,” she said.

On January 24, 2020 a ridged delivery truck did just that, blocking afternoon traffic on what is one of Toowoomba’s busiest roads.

It happened again on July 9, 2015.
