With more than 41 languages wrapped around education daily, a Toowoomba school has highlighted the importance of a sense of belonging for everybody in an annual parade.
Darling Heights State School Intensive English Centre co-ordinator Bev Briffa said 50 per cent of the school community spoke a native language other than English, with a dedicated centre to teach English to families.
“We provide that wrap around support to families, and that's why I think our school is really special, and we live in harmony,” she said.
“We feel Harmony Day is important because it celebrates the culture and diversity of the Australian community.
“We feel its about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
“It’s a day for all to embrace the cultural diversity and share what we have in common when we embrace cultural diversity.”
Ms Briffa said the largest cultural language groups within the school’s community were Arabic, Swahili, Kurdish Kurmanji, Dinka and First Nations.
The state school celebrated Harmony Day yesterday morning with a whole-school parade, where students were encouraged to dress in their culture’s traditional clothing.
The school, located in Toowoomba’s south, has a population of 616 students.
