TOOWOOMBA Regional Councillor Megan O'Hara Sullivan has been announced as the Queensland Labor Party's candidate for Toowoomba North at the October election.
Cr O'Hara Sullivan's announcement ends months of speculation on who will be the party's candidate.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said she believed Cr O'Hara Sullivan's experience and energy would ensure a strong local voice for the people of Toowoomba North.
"We need local champions like Megan to deliver our COVID-19 economic recovery plan, to support businesses, restore local jobs, and encourage more industry to future-proof our great state," the Premier said.
Cr O'Hara Sullivan said she was proud to be part of the Labor team.
"The Palaszczuk Government's national leading health response has kept Queenslanders safe and healthy, and put Queensland in the best possible position for economic recovery," she said.
"I will work alongside my Toowoomba North community to reinvigorate the local economy and get more Queenslanders back to work.
"I'm also proud to be part of a Labor team that has a strong track record of infrastructure and job delivery for our region, such as the game-changing Toowoomba Second Range Crossing that opened last year."
Cr O'Hara Sullivan was re-elected to the council for a second term at the March election.
She finished third on the ballot at the time.
Current LNP Toowoomba North MP Trevor Watts was re-elected to the seat at the 2017 State Election with 55.7 per cent of the two-party preferred vote.
At that election the Labor candidate was current Toowoomba Regional Councillor Kerry Shine.
The electorate has often been considered Labor's best chance of gaining a seat in the region, as they previously held the seat from 1972 to 1974, 1989 to 1992 and from 2001 to 2012.
The next state election will be held on October 31.
