A COUNCIL park in a growing part of Toowoomba will get a major upgrade, after the councillors endorsed a far-reaching master plan.
Thiess Park, a 7.4-hectare area located along Luck St in Darling Heights, will undergo a $2.1 million transformation following the council's approval of the plan.
TRC senior landscape architect Ingrid Steinhardt's report to councillors showed the district-level park was currently only improved by local-level embellishments, and required an upgrade to meet the growing southern Toowoomba population.
"The current park embellishments do not meet the desired standards of service for a district recreation park or a linear corridor as identified in the Toowoomba Region Open Space Strategy," it said.
The plan includes the replacement of old and outdated park assets, improved sustainability and environmental outcomes, more recreational and support facilities, and additional tree plant.
TRC environment and community portfolio leader Cr Tim McMahon said the upgrade of Thiess Park and other natural spaces across the city would be a benefit for the community.
"The adoption of master plans for these parks will provide future design directions allowing Council to plan staged park upgrades," Cr McMahon said.
"These park areas have limited recreational facilities, and upgrades would be required to meet district recreation standard.
"The upgrades of recreational facilities planned in the proposed master plans would encourage people to visit and stay longer in the parks."
