Cold snap hits South West Queensland with some areas hitting sub 0 degrees

South West residents have faced the coldest morning of the year with temperatures plummeting below 0 degrees in some areas.

The frosty morning did little to deter Toowoomba residents who despite early morning temperatures nearing freezing were out walking their dogs and playing with their children at Queens Park.

Across the South West temperatures plummeted for the coldest morning of the year so far with many towns facing a subzero cold front.

At 5.55am Tuesday morning Toowoomba clocked in at chilling low of 1.1C while Wellcamp Airport on the outskirts of Toowoomba was -0.9 degrees at 6am.

These temperatures are far below the June minimum average of 6.3C and below the previous coldest morning of the year of 2.9C on June 5.

Heading west Oakey and Jondaryan both recorded a minimum temperature of -1.3C while in the Western Downs Dalby was -0.6C and Chinchilla and Miles were -1C.

In the Maranoa region Roma copped the worst of the cold front, recording bone chilling temperature of -3.6C at 7am while neighbouring Charleville was -1.9C.

Warwick and Stanthorpe both had a relatively warm morning by comparison, recording a cool 3.6C reading while Goondiwindi was 2.9C.

The region’s cold weather is expected to continue for the remainder of the week with a minimum day time temperature of 4C and a maximum of 14C from Wednesday to Friday before temperatures rise slightly to 16C and 17C at the weekend.
