UPDATE: Due to the latest COVID-19 restrictions, unfortunately the Jesus Christ Superstar performance at St Mary’s College will not be going ahead on Wednesday, March 31 and Thursday, April.
According to the school’s media spokeswoman, St Mary’s are currently planning to postpone the production, however a date has not yet been confirmed.
EARLIER: St Mary’s College and St Saviour’s College students will take to the stage this week with their latest musical, Jesus Christ Superstar.
Loosely based on the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, the show follows the last week of Jesus Christ’s life and has entertained audiences for more than 40 years.
The musical was meant to be held in early 2020, however due to the events of COVID-19, the production was postponed to the 31st March and 1st April 2021.
St Mary’s College art and drama director John Condon said he was excited to see the production come to life.
“It has been more than a decade since St Mary’s College has produced a musical,” he said.
“We have a number of extremely talented boys at this College, who have been working hard to perfect the show for more than 12 months.
“We are lucky to be able to join forces with the girls from St Saviour’s College, who have also been working exceptionally hard.”
Mr Condon said Jesus Christ Superstar would mark the beginning of a new tradition at St Mary’s College.
“A number of our students are interested in the arts, and we plan to hold regular musicals in the future to provide them with more performing arts opportunities,” he said.
Year 12 student William Thomas said he was looking forward to taking on the lead role of Jesus Christ.
“This will be my first professional musical and acting performance,” he said.
“The entire cast are excited to show off the cultural side of the College and to be involved in the first production to be held in the new Edmund Rice Cultural Centre.”
William is an ATAR student who plans to follow his passion of performing arts at University next year.
“I’m currently studying music and drama, and I was lucky to be able to perform a song from Jesus Christ Superstar for my music assessment piece,” he said.
