More wet weather is on the horizon for Toowoomba today, according to Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Livio Regano, as moisture is channelled onshore from the Tasman Sea.
“Until Saturday there is a reasonable chance, probably 50/50, of getting at least one shower a day,” Mr Regano said.
“I wouldn’t be counting on any decent falls, but we’re looking at a few millimetres a day if we’re lucky.
“Today there is a pretty high chance of showers, around 70 per cent, as the rain hitting Brisbane and the coast is pushing a long way inland.”
Mr Regano said today also bought an outside chance of a thunderstorm.
“Storms in general do prefer to form in the mid to late afternoon, but I wouldn’t be betting on them,” he said.
“They will be isolated in nature, you’re more likely to get a short sharp shower at some point and maybe another a couple of hours later, that sort of thing.”
He said the wet weather was the result of a number of factors.
“You’ve got moisture not only in the surface but through the deep levels in the atmosphere
its been channelling onshore because of the high in the Tasman Sea,” he said.
“There is also an offshore trough which is basically destabilising the atmosphere over southeast Queensland.”
He said the showers would start to “dwindle” come Saturday.
“Sunday will be interesting – there’s a lot that could change from Sunday into Monday,” he said.
“There is a possibility of an offshore low forming, it’s already forming now off Cairns, and if it does it might do a dog leg and come a lot further south.
“If that happens, we might have a very unusual summer situation of having a westerly wind which is rare, but when we get them it’s quite hot, so Monday, Tuesday, even in Toowoomba we might get low 30 degree temperatures.”
