A young man has told a court he felt forced to run down his girlfriend’s stepfather to avoid a punch to the face.

Blake Taylor Glasscock, 20, appeared before a Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Monday, August 19 and pleaded guilty to with driving without due care or attention after running down his partner’s stepfather on a suburban street in Toowoomba last year.

Police prosecutor Chris Willson told the court Glasscock was in his vehicle with his girlfriend in the passenger seat when they saw her stepfather step onto the road outside Glasscock’s residence.

“He slowed the vehicle before striking (the stepfather) where he stood, causing him to fall into the southbound lane of the road in front of an oncoming vehicle,” Mr Willson said.

“When asked if he knew that the person on the road was in fact (the stepfather) he said he did and that was the only reason why he didn’t stop.

The stepfather was transported to hospital where staff removed glass embedded in his arms and hands; he was also treated for cuts to his arms and legs and a split lip from hitting the roof of the car.

The prosecutor added there was a “degree of bad blood” between the parties, stating the girlfriend’s parents were unaware of her relationship with Glasscock until they saw the pair together early that day, at which point Mr Glasscock gave them the finger.

“She’d recently moved out of home and not told the parents where she was living,” Mr Willson said.

Glasscock’s lawyer Ashton Marini of RMO Law argued his client had been panicked at the time and felt he had no good option.

“What went through his head was two options: get punched in the face, or don’t stop,” Mr Marini said.

The court heard the aggrieved had punched Glasscock through an open car window after he was hit.

Acting magistrate Patricia Kirkman-Scroope warned Glasscock to seriously consider the weight of his actions.

“You could’ve killed him, you’re 20 years-old now, you could have been standing here being sentenced to murder or something,” Ms Kirkman-Scroope said.

“I mean dumb, dumb, dumb.

“I hope you can see that you clearly made the wrong decision.”

Glasscock was given nine months’ probation, ordered to complete a traffic offenders program and disqualified from driving for three months.
