All exposure is good exposure.

That’s one of the key takeaways for Toowoomba’s Nicholas Joy after he took the nerve-racking steps into the Australian Idol audition room and faced the program’s four internationally-renowned judges.

The stalwart of the Garden City’s musical theatre scene was one of the first people to audition on the program’s Channel 7 revival, which started airing earlier this week.

“I always watched it as a kid and thought it would be something cool to do,” Nicholas said.

“It was a really awesome day, to see everyone else on a similar journey.”

While Nicholas didn’t make it through the audition phase with his enthusiastic rendition of Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now, it hasn’t dampened his desire for performing.

“I truly have something special and I want to keep working at it and see what hits the nail on the head for me,” Nicholas said.

“It’s helped me cement my love of performing and entertaining people - it gave me the confidence to put myself out there.

“I’m not in it for the fame, I’m in it for the love of it.”

Nicholas also regularly hosts karaoke at The Cube Hotel.

The Boy From Oz runs at the Empire Theatre from March 17-26.
