HARD WORK, determination and a XXXX beer is the secret to a long life, according to Agnes Hill who is preparing to celebrate her 100th birthday tomorrow.
Agnes was born in Dalby on September 6, 1920, one of eight children in her family.
After her father's death, she went to live with her Aunt and Uncle on a Dairy farm between Bun and Dalby.
Each morning she would wake early to milk the cows before riding a horse to school.
Agnes said she would wave at her neighbour Jimmy Hill as she rode past - unaware she had met her future husband.
In 1940, Agnes and Jimmy were wed at St John's Church of England in Dalby, surrounded by family and friends.
The couple then moved across the region, heading cattle and dairy farms.
She now lives at home in Toowoomba, visited often by her son, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Agnes' granddaughter Paula Lyons said the family was blessed to have her in their lives.
"She received her letter from the Queen the other day and she was very excited," Ms Lyons said.
"One of my favourite memories of nana is when my parents went on holiday for a few weeks, her and Jim looked after us.
"My grandfather would have chocolates in his pockets and nana would make us yummy sandwiches for lunch."
She added that Agnes had lived through one World War, a depression, the Vietnam and Korean Wars and now the pandemic.
