When it comes to picking a personal highlight of the 2021 Audi Centre Toowoomba Weetwood on Saturday, Toowoomba Turf Club CEO Lizzy King said it was almost too hard to pick.

“The highlight for me – it’s hard to put into one thing,” she said.

“The fact that we were able to put on a spectacular metropolitan race day and have Toowoomba shine like our city counterparts was it for me.

“We put our best foot forward and we know everyone appreciate it.”

The turf club doubled their attendance numbers from the previous year as 5000 people flooded through the gates for Toowoomba’s premier race day.

From the quality of the guests to the Fashions on the Field to the race of the day, the Weetwood Handicap, it was an event for the record books.

“What my team and my board were able to produce, we are so incredibly proud of,” Ms King said.

“Everyone had a fantastic day.

“The turf club is thrilled to be able to present an event to that calibre.”

The big winner of the day was Desleigh Forster’s Apache Chase who took out the Weetwood Handicap.

“We’re very happy with that (win),” Mr Forster said.

“We always said he’d be a better chaser. He’s been able to relax well at home.

“It shows the class and quality (of the horse).”

Apache Chase earned legend status when he took out the most highly anticipated race of the day on Saturday afternoon, but the success is hoped to continue.

Mr Forster said Apache Chase will be aiming toward the $7.5 million Golden Eagle in Sydney next month.

“We’ll worry about the next few runs then assess things after that,” Mr Forster said.

“He’ll go next to a 1400m at Eagle Farm in two weeks time, but it was a really nice to start the campaign off (with a win).”

Among the thousands of residents and visitors at Weetwood on Saturday were guest stars, actor Lincoln Lewis and triple-gold medallist Kaylee McKeown.

“Kaylee helped us out because she was a guest judge on Fashions on the Field,” Ms King said.

“She had a ball.

“Lincoln was a trooper, he had a fantastic time.

“I never once saw them knock back a photo or a chat, they were genuinely lovely people.”

Ms King said after a somewhat restrictive event in 2020, with Covid restrictions limiting the number of guests, so doubling the number of guests in 2021 with less restrictions led to a record-breaking day in many ways.

“I’m just so please that we had a fantastic day,” she said.

“Guests were so well-behaved, we had record sponsorship, and we broke records of sales for bar and food.

“It was an incredibly successful event for us.

“We’re very humbled.”
