Toowoomba to roll out red carpet for Alyssa Azar

UPDATE: Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio said council was "playing a part in a special home-coming" of adventurer Alysssa Azar.

UPDATE: Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio said council was "playing a part in a special home-coming" for mountaineer Alyssa Azar who reached the top of Mt Everest last week.

Cr Antonio said there would be a red carpet for the 19-year-old at Wellcamp Airport next Tuesday.

"Her hard work and tenacity will provide a great deal of inspiration to other young people in our region and across the country," he said.

"Council will discuss plans for a suitable civic event with Alyssa and her family where the whole community will have a chance to acknowledge her magnificent achievement."

THE red carpet will be laid out for Toowoomba's golden-girl Alyssa Azar when the teen makes her triumphant return from climbing Mt Everest.

The teenager became the youngest person to conquer Mt Everest on May 21.

She is expected to leave Nepal in coming days and arrive in Brisbane on June 7.

A helicopter is expected to be waiting to fly them to Wellcamp Airport for an official celebration, hosted by the mayor of Toowoomba Regional Council Cr Paul Antonio.

We will do something very special for a very special young lady. This is an amazing achievement - something that not only this region, but the whole country, should be proud of," Cr Antonio said.

Her father Glenn Azar said: "It all still feels fairly surreal to her. She had been thinking about this and working towards it for so long.

"It's wonderful that she has finally done it. Proud is not a big enough word to describe how I feel."

Ms Azar was successful on her third attempt to climb the mountain. The first two were thwarted by a deadly avalanche and an earthquake.

A spokesman for her team Adventure Professionals said on Thursday she was making her way through Kathmandu and was feeling "well".

She posted a photo to show the living conditions on the mountain.
