It’s the modern day platform for sex workers which often makes headlines and now one Toowoomba user has opened up about the life of an OnlyFans content creator.
When Cherry Hart finished high school, she started working as an insurance broker – an occupation which didn’t exactly fill her cup and one she eventually lost during Covid-19.
“I was 17, living out of home and was really struggling financially … some days I wasn’t sure if I could afford a packet of two-minute noodles for dinner,” she said.
“It’s really important to me to be financially independent and I never want to go back to that place or work a nine to five because it’s just not me.”
In 2020, Cherry began working as a stripper at The Vault and months later launched her OnlyFans account.
OnlyFans is a subscription-based service where predominately sex workers can distribute content exclusive to their subscribers.
With an initial plan to use the platform as a means to connect with regulars from the club who weren’t based in Toowoomba or travelling, Cherry soon discovered it was a second source of income.
Despite the misconception of sex work being easy money, the now 20-year-old has revealed just how much time and effort goes into making her hard earned cash.
From content creation and schedules, to maintaining regular communication with followers, what was once a side hustle for Cherry has quickly turned into a full-time gig on its own.
But it seems the hard work has paid off for Cherry, who now sits in the platform’s top 2 per cent of content creators and can earn up to $3000 a week from OnlyFans alone.
While she said the benefits of the industry outweigh the bad, it hasn’t stopped the driven young woman from coming across plenty of misconceptions.
“People think because you’re a stripper, you’re automatically stupid – I’ve been called a dumb blonde before, but you have to be smart to hustle,” she said.
“I actually have an incredibly supportive following and community so the majority of comments I receive are really positive and the ones that aren’t are usually from guys who won’t pay for porn.”
While in the early days, Cherry recalls copping criticism, she has noticed progression, despite living in what is considered one of Queensland’s most conservative towns.
She said her work has never impacted her dating life or ability to find a romantic partner who accepted her job.
“Toowoomba will always be a conservative town – The Vault fought hard to get here and I think its presence has made the industry a lot more accepted in this town,” she said.
The way the sex industry is often portrayed also differs to Cherry’s own experience, with the 20-year-old having nothing but positive things to say about OnlyFans and The Vault.
In fact, she said the industry has empowered her and helped her to overcome self-esteem and body confidence issues.
“I grew up watching movies like Hustlers but the industry isn’t like that at all and OnlyFans allows users to really take control anyway,” she said.
“For some reason, the sex industry is still very taboo and frowned upon in 2022, but just about every girl and their dog has an OnlyFans account these days.”
While Cherry knows many sex workers who remain private about their OnlyFans account because they are fearful of the stigma and the response they will receive from family and their workplace, her mum has been nothing but supportive since day one.
Her OnlyFans work hasn’t come without its challenges though.
Cherry, who uses her Diploma of Social Media to promote her account on various other platforms, has had her Instagram account deleted twice due to content guidelines.
As a result, she was forced to start over and lost her list of followers which was close to hitting the 100,000 mark and made a noticeable dent in her OnlyFans following too.
The platform has made headlines recently after reality Australian TV show Married At First Sight featured a scandal involving the distribution of content from a participant’s OnlyFans account.
While Cherry doesn’t recall the situation happening to her personally, she said she wouldn’t think twice about taking legal action against anyone.
“I don’t care if people see me naked, but at least pay me for it,” she said.
“At the end of the day, I took the time and effort to make that content and the fact that people share it around for free really grinds my gears … plus it’s a major copyright issue.”
She is also an entrepreneur in the making, currently working to launch her own lingerie business and develop an app for sex workers.
“Every bit of money I make is going into this,” she said.
“I would love to do stripping and OnlyFans forever, but unfortunately I probably won’t be working the poles when I’m 60, so I’m setting myself up for the future too.”
Cherry’s advice for anyone looking to start their own account is to not do it with the expectations of making millions of dollars straight away or without putting the time and effort into building a following.
