A 20-YEAR-OLD man thought he'd outsmarted police when he threw his bumbag of cannabis under the police car before they searched him.

After searching Cameron Anthony Turnbull and finding nothing of note, police went to drive away but felt a bump when they ran over the bumbag, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard.

Turnbull had then picked up the bumbag and run off, discarding clothing as he ran.

A short time later, the 20-year-old returned and was again approached by police.

Asked why he had run off, Turnbull denied running away, the court heard.

A search of the bumbag found 34g of cannabis and in the bushes police had found various prescription drugs which the 20-year-old had discarded as he ran.

Turnbull told police he was due to go out of town with work as a ringbarker and that he took the drugs with him when on the road, the court heard.

He pleaded guilty to possessing a dangerous drug and restricted drugs for which he had no prescription as well as to an unrelated charge of possessing 1g of cannabis, some seroquel pills and drug utensils found during a police search of his Toowoomba home on January 9.

Duty solicitor Ryan McCullough, of MacDonald Law, told the court his client had a good work record and had been ringbarking for the past two years.

His client started using drugs at 17 but had struck to cannabis and prescription drugs and did not touch meth, he said.
Magistrate Graham Lee placed Turnbull on 12 months probation to help get him away from drugs.
