THOUSANDS of people are expected to ascend on the Toowoomba Bypass this weekend to celebrate its opening.

The Ride the Second Range bike ride on September 7 looks set to attract 1200 cyclists to the area, while the Toowoomba Marathon on September 8 will attract 2500 runners across the various lengths, the majority running the 5km route.

Department of Transport and Main Roads regional director Kym Murphy said even more people were expected to take part in the community open day event, featuring market stalls, vintage cars and more, following the ride on September 7.

"The countdown is certainly on," Ms Murphy said.

"We've only got five more sleeps to go until we unveil this wonderful piece of infrastructure to the community.

"The community has embraced this project so this is their opportunity to come and look at their project up close and personal. To look at the twin arch bridges from below, to walk on the viaduct."

Ms Murphy said people only had until Wednesday to register for the open day. No parking is available on the day, visitors instead will need to catch a bus in from several pick up locations around Toowoomba.
