AFL legend Gary Ablett Junior is expected to play at least one game for Palmerston this season

Gary Ablett Junior is expected to play at least one game with Palmerston this NTFL season and bring an equally famous family member with him.

GEELONG superstar Gary Ablett Junior will play at least one game with Palmerston in the NTFL this season, a source close to the club has revealed.

The NT News understands the dual Brownlow medallist will make the trip to the Territory with his legendary father, Gary, in November.

The source revealed Ablett Jr and his father would take part in a few fundraising events in conjunction with the club.

It comes after ABC presenter Charlie King revealed on Saturday the two-time premiership player would be playing in the black and white during the 2022-23 season.

It would be the third trip to the Territory for both men, with Gary Senior playing for the Cats against an NTFL representative team in 1992 and then returned for a sportsman’s night three years later, with Gary Jr also in attendance.

Ablett Jr also played for the Gold Coast Suns in 2012 against the Bulldogs at Marrara.

Both Palmerston and Geelong have been contacted for comment.

Gary Ablett Junior reportedly playing with Palmerston this season

THERE has been an unconfirmed report AFL legend Gary Ablett Junior will play with Palmerston this coming season.

ABC presenter Charlie King said on Saturday he had received information the dual Brownlow medallist would head to Cazalys Arena for the 2022-23 season.

“He is one of the biggest names in Australian football ... footy royalty,” King said.

The club announced last month Betts would return for a second season at Cazalys Arena after seven games in 2021-22.

And while fans are already ecstatic to see Betts play again in his famous forward pocket role, speculation has now moved to another footy legend.

The two-time premiership player and dual Brownlow medallist Ablett Jr will be a massive boost for the Magpies.

Betts confirmed at the tailend of the 2021-22 season that helping the Magpies play finals was a goal of his, and to meet that end he planned to do some major recruiting.

“I’m looking forward to coming back and if I do I’m going to recruit big for the Magpies and we’re going to make sure that they play in the finals next season,” Betts said at the time.

“Hopefully I can do that and bring more talent to the Territory.”

And the former Geelong and Gold Coast star and eight-time All Australian might be part of that goal.

However, Palmerston coach Josh Heath said he could neither confirm nor deny the report.

“There will be no comment from us at this stage,” Heath told the NT News.

It could be another off-season coup for the Magpies.

Palmerston, which finished second bottom last season, has already snapped up William and Josiah Farrer (from Southern Districts) and former Nightcliff captain Phillip Wills during the off-season while Nichols medallist Eric Guthrie has also recommitted.

Geelong Football Club has been contacted for comment.
