MANY years ago, Carl Kuhn made a promise to the veterans of Milne Bay.
They asked him to make sure their museum - the Milne Bay Military Museum - would never close, and to try to keep it running as long as possible.
While the majority of those veterans have passed on, Mr Kuhn remains a man of his word.
A veteran's welfare officer and Vietnam veteran, Mr Kuhn can now be found every Wednesday and Thursday morning, collecting signatures on the corner of Margaret and Ruthven Streets to petition the Department of Defence to gift the MBMM's land and building to the Toowoomba community.
The petition, launched by the MBMM committee, comes after the museum was hit with an eviction notice in November 2017.
Mr Kuhn has singularly amassed 3000 signatures.
The museum has been closed since November 2016 over Workplace Health and Safety issues and missing WWI and WWII firearms.
What was initially meant to be a six-week closure became indefinite after the department reportedly told the committee it wanted its land back, as the museum was a public organisation, not a defence museum.
MBMM president Marian Jones said the committee had since written to Defence Minister Marise Payne twice, and was yet to receive a reply.
The petition is the next step in the fight to regain control of the museum. The committee is hoping to collect 20,000 signatures.
If you wish to sign the petition, email museum25battalion@westnet.com.au for a copy, or visit Toowoomba South MP David Janetzki's office at 566 Ruthven Street.
Completed petitions can be dropped off at Mr Janetzki's office, or contact the committee and they will pick them up.
