Tenants leave rental home in filthy, stinking $30k wreck

THIS is the rental house too filthy for a cleaning company. In just two months, more than 12 people moved in and moved out, leaving the place in ruins.

THIS is the rental house too filthy for a cleaning company to take on.

Joe Courte's North Toowoomba investment property has been left utterly trashed by its tenants, leaving him with a cleaning bill that he estimates will be about $30,000.

The first cleaning company to see the home rejected the job.

Mr Courte originally rented to a single mother and her two children in October, but by the time police evicted the household last week, neighbours said at least 10 adults and a number of children were living in the stench-filled house.

Mr Courte said despite the state of the house and no rent being paid, it took two months to go through the eviction process.

"I own every house in this street, and two other tenants have moved out to get away from these people.

"My phone's been ringing day and night. They've destroyed the house and made it virtually unliveable.

"They've smashed the bathroom up, so there's no toilet. How do they live?"

Mr Courte said the Rental Tenancy Authority processes were overly burdensome on landlords, and the timeframes on when tenancy breach notices could be given have to be tightened.

RTA CEO David Eades said the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act is being reviewed, with an aim to ensure it balances the rights of both tenants and landlords.
