There could be a two year delay to the start of construction for a mega-development in Claremont, after the proponents of the Windermere Bay Precinct were granted an extension to commence.
At the site of the former Claremont Primary School, up to 315 dwellings, shops, a cafe and other facilities will be built, after a permit was issued in March 2021.
Recently, adjoining property owners and those who had made representations before the plans were approved received a letter, which mentioned a two-year extension had been granted.
Glenorchy Council development manager Paul Garnsey confirmed an extension of time was granted on February 23.
“This is something that’s allowed under the scheme, it takes into account the developer is not able to start development for various reasons,” Mr Garnsey said.
“That a fairly normal thing to happen.”
Mr Garnsey said there was also a separate request to amend the permit.
“Originally the permit involved a stage where there would be demolitions of some of the existing buildings, it also required at that point refurbishment of the original school house,” he said.
“The amendment was basically to separate those two so the demolition can occur prior to the refurbishment of the school house.
“We did condition that amended permit that we require the refurbishment to commence within 12 months of the demolition.”
The site at Cadbury Road has been the subject of different housing proposals but has remained empty since the school shut in 2011.
The approved development would retain the original heritage-listed school building.
