Why a ‘little scoot up the road’ is newest monthly social outing at Penguin

“In a car you are closed in and no bugger wants to talk to you”: Why this group of bikies are ditching the Harleys and Ducatis for something a little more fuel-efficient.

Tommy Edwards has been riding postie bikes “since letters were written on stone tablets” and he says wherever he travels he finds a friend.

“People will come up and talk to you, they’ll ask you where you’re from and they tell you where they are from,” Mr Edwards said.

“They invite you to their house and everything, but in a car you are closed in and no bugger wants to talk to you.”

Mr Edwards said “a little scoot up the road” was simply a “good social outing” for both men and ladies, which is why he has started Penguin’s newest community group: The Penguin Posties.

For the group’s first official ride, more than a dozen people turned up to the Penguin skate park on their Posite bikes, also known as the Honda CT110.

Georgia Sherlock and her Mum, Nicole will be joining the crew when they get their bike licenses this month.

“It’s just a bit of fun, they don’t go too fast like the usual motorbike,” Georgia said.

Nicole said she grew up on motorbikes and her late Dad was a milk delivery man who also rode a postie.

She recalled visiting the family’s shack at Arthur River and being told to ride as long as she liked.

“We’d go from daylight to dusk and try and see how far out to Marrawah we could get on a tank of fuel.

“Dad would actually have to come out looking for us because we would run out of fuel,” she said.

Don Seymour did his bike licence test in Penguin 30 years ago. He has a couple of bikes at home but says postie bikes are much better fun, and only cost $5 to fill up.

“It’s so light and nimble, it’s easy to control,” he said ahead of the inaugural Penguin Posties ride.

The newly formed group go for a swim, coffee and a laugh in Penguin before hitting the bitumen and the next ride is set for Sunday, May 25.
