A notorious Kingston road intersection, which has been the site of 19 collisions over the past five years, will have traffic lights installed under a federal Black Spot program.

Announcing $3.5m in funding to address 14 separate black spots across the state, Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Senator Carol Brown said the Kingston project at the intersection of Beach Road and Church Street, was recommended by the Black Spot consultative panel in Tasmania.

“Kingston is one of the fastest-growing communities in Tasmania, which is why it’s important we ensure our road infrastructure is kept up to date so they’re safe and fit-for-purpose,” she said.

“Every death on Tasmanian roads is a tragedy and could have been avoided.

Kingborough mayor Paula Wriedt said the council has contributed $250,000, and the Federal Government $500,000, to install the traffic lights at an intersection she said was one of the busiest in the municipality.

“As part of Road Safety Week this announcement will improve safety here in Kingston for all road users,” Ms Wriedt said.

Federal Member for Franklin, Julie Collins, said she was proud to be a part of a government that was delivering high-priority safety improvements, and encouraged Tasmanians to nominate sites in future funding rounds.

“I welcome the road safety upgrades that will be happening across the electorate of Franklin – including more than $500,000 to improve traffic flow in Kingborough, $210,000 to construct a channelised right-turn lane at Acton Park, and $250,000 to install a safety barrier in Cygnet,” Ms Collins said.
